Community impact

Programs and initiatives.

Delta Xi Lambda does not run programs for the sake of running programs. Each initiative addresses a specific, real need in the Central Florida community. These are sustained commitments, not one-time events, and they have been running for decades.

Young Men of Distinction

500+Graduates since the program began

Delta Xi Lambda's most recognized program, YMOD develops young men across four dimensions: academic achievement, leadership, social engagement, and personal responsibility. Brothers serve as mentors, role models, and coaches to Orlando-area students throughout the school year.

Through monthly educational modules, college tours, entrepreneurship workshops, public speaking training, and community service, YMOD participants build the skills and mindset they need to succeed beyond the classroom. Graduates are also eligible for scholarships through the I.S. Hankins–F.A. Johnson Education Foundation.

MLK Commemorative Luncheon

40Years running as of 2026

Every year, Delta Xi Lambda gathers Orlando's civic, business, faith, and community leaders to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The MLK Commemorative Luncheon is one of Central Florida's longest-running MLK tributes, now in its 40th year.

The luncheon is more than a commemoration. It is a convening of people who believe the work Dr. King began is still unfinished, and who gather each January to recommit to it together.

Belford V. Lawson Oratorical Competition

6–12Grades eligible · Lake, Orange, Osceola & Seminole Counties

Named for Belford Vance Lawson, Jr. — civil rights pioneer, Alpha Phi Alpha's 16th General President, and the first African American to win a case before the U.S. Supreme Court — this annual competition gives middle and high school students a platform to develop their voice and engage with issues that matter.

Participants deliver prepared speeches on a topic chosen each year by the Foundation. Students who advance from the local competition go on to regional and national rounds. There is no admission charge, and the competition is open to the public.

Advocacy in Action

Alpha Phi Alpha has believed for nearly a century that a voteless people is a hopeless people. Delta Xi Lambda acts on that belief through voter registration drives, civic education forums, canvassing, and a formal precinct adoption partnership with the Orange County Supervisor of Elections.

Through its Government Relations Committee and the I.S. Hankins–F.A. Johnson Education Foundation, the chapter works to ensure every eligible Central Florida resident has the information, access, and motivation to participate in the democratic process.

National Alpha Phi Alpha programs

Part of a larger mission.

Beyond its five signature programs, Delta Xi Lambda also participates in three national Alpha Phi Alpha programs that extend the Fraternity's mission into additional areas of community need.

Get involved

These programs run because brothers show up.

Every program on this page depends on the men of Delta Xi Lambda giving their time, expertise, and presence. If you are interested in supporting our work as a sponsor, volunteer, or partner, we want to hear from you.
